Ai Amano Cosplay - Alice in Cosplayland -

Videogirl Ai is one of the funniest yet most dramatic animes that I saw as a teenager. I watched and read it when I was young. It tells the story of a girl that comes out of a VHS to help a boy that has been rejected by his beloved. Something goes wrong when Ai comes out of the video and she becomes a tomboy.

I was very much like Ai when I was young. She was supposed to be very cute and nice on the outside but somehow she is actually not. Nevertheless, she is sweet and caring inside and people have to accept her how she is. I feel a bit bad for Ai as she is always helping other people but nobody seems to help her much. The story of my life.

With this cosplay I learnt how to dye a wig with sharpies, I made one of my first bodysuits and succesfully created boot covers that actually worked and looked nice. It can be done, it just takes practice.

How I made my Ai Amano Cosplay

I figured out that the pattern mixed old fashioned 80’s clothing with a traditional kimono. I drafted a kimono pattern and modified it adding elastic bands to the sleeves and bias binding to the borders. On top I added the caplet or mini cloak. It has all kinds of crazy details and bows in different colours. The obi or belt ended up in tassels that I made with yarn. I also dyed and styled the wig myself with markers.

For the boot covers I covered my boots with masking tape, made a pattern and transferred it to fabric on the bias for a better fit. Then, I added some more details and elastics to secure them and they were done.

I could have made my own leggings but they were so cheap that I couldn’t bother. However, I did make all my tassels one by one using yarn.

Ai Amano Swimsuit version

I really really like the first episode of the anime. Ai ends up in the shower wearing a lovely swimsuit. Whenever I cosplay I make my best to pay attention to the details. Ai actually wears this other suit underneath her other clothes. Probably not many people will notice this as it is not seen more than a few minutes, but it is a good detail that makes your cosplay more accurate. Plus, I love the design.

I made this other cosplay with stretch fabrics in black and purple. Although you will need to modify it you can use this bodysuit pattern as a base for this cosplay. I originally drafted the top from scratch to make it look like a 3 piece bodysuit. I used glass beads an ribbons for the details.
