Ruby Rose volume 5 cosplay making off

The best part of this cosplay was that 99% of the materials are recycled or very old fabric leftovers from my stash! First, I made the shirt and the cloak with my old bedsheets. Then, the corset had fabric pieces from many other projects and it worked out perfectly well.

I actually made this cosplay in just one week! I was very motivated and I did one part each day. You can follow all the tutorials on my Instagram. I go through the full build! (Psst, I post daily and my stories are full of WIPs, tips and cats)

This character has been on my cosplay wishlist for ages and I actually bought the wig while the first season was still on. I paired it with the Sweety Bella Grey contact lenses from Uniqso, which are my favourite for grey/blue eyes. We actually took amazing photos in the garden which I edited myself.

How I made my Mulan cosplay

Lately I make all my patterns on Illustrator, I used a base pattern and traced over it to adjust it to my needs. It may seem tricky but when you get used to it you save a lot of time and you can store the patterns in your computer. My choice of fabrics was a mixture of light satins, taffeta and georgette. They were all very flowy fabrics that matched the character and the period, yet easy to get in a budget. Of course, feel free to go for silk if you can afford it.

I made the shirt in georgette and added ribbons to tie it. The skirt, made with a very light satin, has pleats on the top and adjusts with long ribbons to the front and back in a traditional way. The jacket has an assymetrical bottom edge. I lined it with burgundy fabric and it adjusts to the body with a taffeta sash.

For the make up, I used terracotta and reddish tones for the eyes and rouge for the cheeks. I also used a parted black wig for the hair. If you can afford it get a black parted lace front wig. It will look much better and realistic. I didn’t need lenses as my eyes are brown and I went for a more realistic look.

You can make your own patterns for this dress. However, you can also download the Han Fu Chinese Dress pattern that I used to make this exact dress. It comes with instructions and patterns for all the pieces, including the shirt, skirt, jacket and sashes. Getting patterns for cosplay takes less time than designing your own, as they have already been tested and will also give you instructions on how to make them. Furthermore, they come with an estimation of how much material you need. Guess who had to come back to the shop for more fabric for her Mulan cosplay.

Wearing my Mulan cosplay

Mulan was actually a commission for a friend. However, she was also one of my favourite Disney characters and I couldn’t resist taking a few pictures with the cosplay. Always with the permission of my friend. Thank you Lily.

As you may know, I practice martial arts. One of the forms we practice is the Tai Chi Chinese sword. My form needs to improve lots but looks quite cool on pictures. Remember that posing for cosplay is part of the trick and it is just fun, so don’t forget to get into character!

My Rapunzel Padawan cosplay was one of those crazy ideas that you get a few weeks before a convention drinking a strawberry slushie with your best friend. We just wanted to have fun and at the time Disney had just bought the Star Wars franchise. Disney… Star Wars… t looked like a great idea.

I chose the light side of The Force with Rapunzel and my friend Larxenne fell into the Dark side with her Snow White. We used the designs by pushfighter and very soon we had our new cosplays.

How I made my Rapunzel Padawan Cosplay

Star Wars costumery has always been just incredible. Their designs have a lot of Japanese inspiration and that is why I based myself on a gi top for the shirt. However, I did add some darts to it in order to adjust it better to my body and create the illusion of a thin waist as is the style of most Disney films.

The skater skirt was made with a circular pattern. I mixed several satins and cottons to make both the top and the skirt. Some of the skirt was hemmed and in the front part I added bias tape. For this cosplay I mostly used leftover fabric that I had at home. Under the skirt I was wearing another one with a lace trim and a petticoat too. for extra volume. Also, for the overalls I used fabric paints to create some designs on Rapunzel’s style. Finally, I used a toy laser sword and some yarn for her weapon.

For Rapunzel’s make up I tried to imitate that of her film. I painted some freckles and rouge cheeks, pink lips and I used a messy short brown wig and Western Eyes green contact lenses that I bought in Uniqso.

Wearing my cosplay

The first time I wore my cosplay was in a competition in Almeria with my friend Larxenne. We had so much fun practicing a skit with our light sabers! We actually won a second prize. This was probably our funniest skit.

I wore this cosplay again in Liverpool for a photoshoot with amazing photographer Ian Moore. It was a last minute call but I knew the location with the dunes would work great for the character.

I had to overcome my vertigo and sat on top of a tree for the sake of these amazing shots. I almost felt comfortable by the end of the shot! And this is the power of cosplay. You can become someone else for a day and forget about your fears. Best feeling ever.

I am all about the difficult cosplays and the Do It Yourself movement, but sometimes it is OK to cheat and get some prebought items. I just wanted to make something easy and fun. That’s where I got the idea for my Carmen Sandiego cosplay, which is what you can call a wardrobe cosplay. If you are a cosplay beginner that don’t know where to start, this is a very good idea for a starting cosplay.

Carmen Sandiego was one of my favourite cartoons when I was a kid. I used to watch it everyday and I actually learnt a lot about geography and monuments with her. How I miss my educational cartoons. I was very happy when Netflix decided to make a remake and I enjoyed bing watching all the episodes. The character is different but they make homage to the old one and it is actually quite fun.

How I made it

I wouldn’t consider this cosplay 100% accurate as not all the proportions match the animated character. However, I think this would be a very close match if they were to make a life action with the character. It was striking to wear on the streets but nobody really noticed, much, probably.

For once I don’t have pictures of the process of my Carmen Sandiego cosplay as most of the pieces where bought for it. Even if all of the pieces were bought in stores, I did modify them to fit my purposes. My bodysuit is the same one I used for my Black Widow cosplay. When I got it I had to take in the sides to get a better fit. I also cut off the sleeves for this version and made a new zipper dangle with worbla.

I tried to make her huge hat with red fabric and foam but I miserably failed. Sometimes you have to accept your defeat and look for another way. Fortunately, I was able to find a hat on Amazon that would do the trick and it wasn’t too expensive either. My coat, gloves and belt are just part of my everyday wardrobe, but let’s face it, when I bought the coat I knew I was cosplaying Carmen

To get a perfect look you need a good wig and contact lenses. In this occasion I got a lovely auburn lace front wig and the Crazy Lens Mirror Contact lenses from Uniqso. I have actually written a review of the contacts and a review of the wig if you are interested and want to see more pictures.

Wearing my Carmen Sandiego Netflix cosplay

I wore this cosplay on the streets of multicultural Liverpool. My photographer and friend Stephen Sheridan made me feel like a super model and took some pictures that could have been taken from the best black and white detective film of the 50s. I was totally made up and had fun selecting my favourite pictures and drinking chocolate with him. I’m afraid I selected all of the pictures and was of no help at all.

One of the locations had a drawing of “La Muerte” . It was very fitting as the new characters seems to be from South America and it was a really nice touch for the photos. And by the way, if you are wondering, we took all the pictures early in the morning! The magic of photography

Astrid is really cool, she rides the dragon Stormfly and she is a fierceless dragon tamer. I loved her in the first film and even more in the second. I like how she is more mature now (but still a teenager!) This is how I made Astrid Hofferson

I postponed this cosplay several times as I really wanted to do it well. It was a big project at the time. Actually, it took a long time to find a knit fabric that matched the pants and tshirt. I made all of it myself.

How I made Astrid Cosplay

All the little skulls and details are handmade one by one with foam clay. It took a long time but I enjoyed the process. I also had to dye the fur as I couldn’t find a perfect match.

I have made several tutorials for this cosplay including how to make the pauldrons and how to sew the trousers. My basic pattern started as a jean pattern with narrower legs.

The wig was a mixture of knots and braids that I made up on the spot. I styled it myself. I made the axe with plastazote a PVC tube and more fur and leather for the details.

Wearing Astrid Cosplay

I loved wearing this cosplay. As I said, it took me a while to finally finish it but I made sure I did it right. In the end I entered this cosplay to a competition and I won best costume. I had a great day wearing it.

Elsa was a hit. Everybody wanted to cosplay her and no wonder why. She is a very powerful woman who doesn’t want to be trapped.

I made an original cosplay based on Frozen. Summer holidays were coming and so were the conventions that took place near the beach. I decided to make my own version of Elsa if she were to wear a swimsuit.

How I made my Elsa swimsuit cosplay

I was lucky enough to get a swimsuit that already had a snowflake looking design. With that, some cool blue fabrics and lots of patience i made my outfit.

The real challenge was to cut the little pieces to sew them to the swimsuit. So…many…of… them…cut one by one. First, I tested the colours, I used acetate (clear plastic sheets) and I tried different nail polishes to see which one I liked best. I chose a white and a light blue, both of them seethrough to paint every single scale.

Another detail I made was to round the borders of each piece. Furthermore, I made holes on top and bottom of each one. I recommend you to do it before you start sewing, it saves a lot of time. However, it still took me ages to sew every single individual piece.

It took me 2 days non-stop from 12am to 12pm, with only lunch and dinner short breaks to finish sewing all the pieces.

Wearing my Elsa swimsuit cosplay

I wore this cosplay at Summer Freak 2014, all the little girls asked me if I was a real princess and I had lots of fun.

I also decided to make the Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS that was viral at the time. After all, the cold never bothered my anyway.

When you are invited to a costume party you need to choose the best dress. I chose Maleficent cosplay as what can go wrong in a kid’s party if you wear this dress?

Cuando te invitan a una fiesta de disfraces necesitas elegir el mejor disfraz. Elegí el cosplay de Malefica, que puede ir mal en una fiesta de disfraces para niños si llevas este cosplay?

This is an old costume I made for a kids party for Spain’s Carnival. My friends and I decided to go as villains of Disney films and I did all the costumes (why did I offer myself? I don’t know…). I had to do 5 costumes in less than a month but with a bit of help I finished them on time.

Este es un disfraz que hice para una fiesta de niños por Carnaval. Mis amigas y yo decidimos ir de villanas de Disney y a mi me toco hacer todos los disfraces (porqué me ofrecí? aún no lo se…). Tuve que hacer 5 disfraces en menos de un mes pero con algo de ayuda conseguí terminar a tiempo.

The cloak

The cloak itself was not difficult to make but the neck was hell. After a couple of mock ups I managed to get it right. The fabric was double and I turned it. I put a wire inside and sew it in place to keep it up.

El abrigo en si no fue difícil pero el cuello fue un quebradero de cabeza. Después de un par de intentos conseguí lo que buscaba. La tela la cosí doble y luego le dí la vuelta. Por dentro le metí alambre y lo cosí al filo para que se mantuviera derecho.

The rest of the cloak was actually really easy to make, basically I drew theshape into a 3 meter long fabric folded in two. I lined it with purple fabric and added the purple part to the front. Also, I wore a red dress under the robe.

El resto del abrigo fue en realidad fácil de hacer, básicamente dibuje laforma en un trozo de tela negro de unos 3 metros dobladoa por la mitad. Lo forré por dentro de lila y también le puse el detalle del fuelle lila delante. Además, llevaba un vestido rojo debajo para que se viera por los laterales.

The details

Don’t forget the details! I love the big black ring she wears. It looks so evil. I used a blank ring, a black cameo and a cabochon and painted it with nail polish.

No olvidéis los detalles! Me encanta el anillo negro gigante que lleva. Es tan malvado. Usé una base de anillo, una de camafeo y un cristal y lo pinté con laca de uñas.

I made the horns with paper and wire. They actually looked really nice. I am very proud of them even if they took a long time to make. I made a horn tutorial based on their construction. Of course I made Maleficent’s staff as well with a PVC pipe. Remember you can add simple lights to props as well.

Hice los cuernos con papel de periódico y alambre. La verdad es que quedaron muy bien. Estoy orgullosa de ellos aunque me llevara tiempo terminarlos. Hice un tutorial para cuernos basado en ellos. Por supuesto también hice el cetro de Maléfica con un tubo de PVC. Recuerda que puedes añadir luces a tus props facilmente.

Wearing Maleficent Cosplay

My beautiful friend Larxenne joined me the next time I wore Maleficent’s cosplay. We had a photoshoot in the forest before we went to the cinema dressed like this to see the new Maleficent film. Fotofobico was our photographer and Larxenne and I edited the pictures.

Mi preciosa amiga Larxenne se unió a mi locura la siguiente vez que llevé el cosplay de Maléfica. Hicimos una sesión de fotos en el bosque y nos fuimos al cine a ver la nueva película de Maléfica vestidas así. Fotofobico nos hizo las fotos y entre las dos las editamos.

Many kids run away when they saw my Maleficent Cosplay with the horns and the sceptre. Including my nieces. What can I say, I did my job well.

Muchos niños salieron corriendo cuando vieron mi cosplay de Maléfica con los cuernos y el cetro. Incluyendo a mis sobrinas. Qué puedo decir, hice bien mi trabajo.
