First things first

When wearing contact lenses make sure you do so safely. If you are new to contact lenses I recommend you to visit an ophtalmologist first, some countries require you to get a prescription even if you have perfect eyesight. Always get your lenses from a trusted seller to make sure your contact lenses are safe.I have been buying mine from Uniqso for years and you can get a 10% off if you use the code “ALICECOS“. Of course, also keep in mind that contact lenses need maintenance and you want to make sure you keep your contact lenses safe and clean. Lenses do have a limited lifespan, it is best to keep track of the ones you own. It is (not) all about the colours

Of course, the first thing you look at when searching for lenses is the colour. However, it is not so straight forwards. There are many other factors that will affect your choice of contacts.

Tones and hues

Let’s say you are looking for blue circle lenses. Just a quick search is going to give you over 300 choices. This is because not all blues are the same. There are many hues and subtleties to each lens.

This is a comparison of the Sweety Bella grey and the EOS New Adult Blue. I absolutely love both pairs when I need blue contacts, but I would use them for completely different characters. I find the first ones are more realistic, whereas the second ones wouldn’t be something you would see in the real world but would be perfect for my anime characters.

Number of colours

Lenses rarely have only one colour. Actually, that usually results on very unrealistic lenses. The most realistic lenses will have at least two colours, 2-tone and 3-tone lenses are the most common and more belieavable looking. You can also get rainbow ones!

The Sweety Crazy Lens Mirror contact lenses I used for my Carmen Sandiego cosplay only have one colour and they create and odd unrealistic effect that can be perfect for some cartoon characters.

Diameter of the lens

The human iris is on average 10mm to 13mm, however, contact lenses are slightly bigger in order to cover it completely. The most natural lenses tend to be on the small size, around 14 mm. Circle lenses that make your eyes look bigger are around 14.5mm. For a more drastic effect you can try minisclera lenses, these are around 17mm. Finally, the sclera lenses are 22mm, they cover virtually the whole eye but they are also more uncomfortable and risky to wear.

Notice that some lenses with the same size may get bigger or smaller coloured areas, this means that even two 14 mm lenses could have a different effect. My Sweety shining brown are only 14.5 mm but make my eyes look bigger than many other contacts I have worn.

How much coverage do you need?

Contacts are supposed to cover your eyes, but how much of your eye? From very realistic contacts which will just cover the bare minimum to hide your true eye colour to contacts that will cover the whole of your eye, there are many possibilities. Not only that, you can also choose a lens that will blend with your eye or ones that will completely change its appearance.

Transparency of the lens

You would expect coloured lenses to be completely opaque but this is not necessarily the case. Actually, those lenses which are slightly translucent tend to blend better with your eyes. Of course, if your eyes are very dark and you need a very striking colour like yellow, you need lenses that cover your eyes very well. Furthermore, the effect may be different on blue, green or brown eyes, that is why it is always a good idea to check all the reviews to get an idea of how they will look on eyes similarly coloured to yours.

Green lenses like these Sweety Devil Green tend to have not so good covarage on dark eyes, which makes them look darker. It is always a good idea to check the customer photos to make sure they will look as expected on your eyes.

Pupil width and full coverage

Although contact lenses tend to have a similar pupil width you can actually get narrow or wide pupils on contacts. Of course, using contacts with wide pupils will show more of your iris and those with a narrow pupil may create a tunnel vision. You can completely make your eyes look one colour, usually with a mesh or with a translucent plain colour. These lenses however tend to be more uncomfortable as they slightly blur your vision.

The Sweety Cyan mesh cover your eyes completely. Your vision may get a bit blurry but nothing drastic. They create a very unique effect.

The circles inside your circle lenses

The rim of the lens is the outer circle of your contacts. You may not have noticed, but most lenses will have a different tone on the inner and outer circles of the lens. These can either be completely uniform or fade to blend with your eye.

Rim or no rim

It is very common to find contact lenses with a rim, this actually helps define the iris even more. Usually this rim is black or very dark, but you can also find contact lenses with no rim at all. The absence of a rim can make your lenses look odd depending on the style you choose.

Even a subtle rim like the one in my Sweety Devil Red will make your eyes pop up and look more believable.

Inner ring definition

In order to blend better with your eyes, many contact lenses tend to fade on the inside. A scattered pattern that gets less dense towards the pupil is another common method. Fantasy lenses are in general more striking and there is a sharp edge around the pupil, this also makes them less realistic. You can also get lenses with different shapes on the pupil like hearts or stars

You can clearly see both the inner ring and the outer ring of the lenses in my Sweety Harajuku Blue contacts. The colour is often darker than the main lens or even black. Also notice that the pupil opening on these lenses is wider than usual and they let my true eye colour show.

Outer ring definition

Similar to the inner ring, you can get all kinds of effects on the outer ring of your circle lenses. A sharp or slightly faded edge is the norm. Some lenses have a scattered rim or little lines around it. It is also possible to get lenses with some kind of geometric design around them, so don’t expect them to be necessarily all round!

Special drawings and effects

Indeed, you don’t need to stick to boring looking contact lenses. You can find all kinds of designs engraved on your favourite lenses. Stars, dots, flowers, hello kitties, anything. Oddly enough, some of my favourite contacts have weird shapes on them which are not noticeable unless you get really close. There is a lot of possibilities out there.

In most cases you can’t see the drawings on your contact lenses from afar, but they create interest in your eyes. Can you see the Galaxy drawings on my Sweety Galaxy Green contacts?

Schuuchiin Academy uniform

I wrote a full tutorial on how I made this uniform on my Instagram account. The pattern will also be available on my Cosplay Pattern Store very soon. I used black and white cotton fabrics for this project and it only took me one day to construct it!

Chika Fujiwara

Chika is the crazy secretary of the Student Council, she is in the Board Game Club and will suggest all kinds of crazy games to play with the other characters! She is sweet and she is always smiling.

Chika wig

I used a lovely wig in pastel pink from Uniqso which was a perfect match for the character. It has a straight fringe and a mix of fibers with pink and light blonde which makes it super natural. I think the wig makes you look super tanned as it is quite pale. It is comfortable and has a lot of room. It also has hooks to adjust it. The wig cap is beige so it blends very well with ligtht skin.

Kaguya Shinomiya

The vicepresident of the Student Council is Kaguya-sama, a rich girl who doesn’t know a lot of the world outside. She is extremely clever and would rather die than confess her secret love to the President of the Student Council. Although she may look scary she is indeed a sweet person that only wants to fit in.

For Kaguya-sama I chose contact lenses that hid my pupils. I had previously used this type of mesh lens for my Black Canary cosplay. In this occassion I chose the Sweety Crazy Lens – Red Mesh with black rim. If you notice I used the Cyan Mesh version for Chika as well. If you are wondering, yes you can see through theses lenses. However, they are not comfortable to wear for long as they actually make your vision blurry. It feels like looking through a red glass. The effect is similar with the blue lenses but perhaps less noticeable. These lenses have a nesh pattern that covers your entire eye and a black rim around the pupil. They also make your eyes look bigger.

Sweety Devil Green lenses

The Sweety Devil Green contact lenses have a dark green colour. They are not as vibrant as the Sweety Devil red which I reviewed in the past, but they are nevertheless interesting. On top of my dark eyes they became a deep jade colour. The outer rim is escalonated in black and it has a starbust effect in the center as well. One of the main features of this collection of lenses is the slits that let your real eye colour show through them.

These lenses make your eyes look bigger and they are great for a subtle effect. Although they are dark and not my favourite lenses, I am sure I will find them use for many other characters. For example my Froppy cosplay would be a perfect match.

Cosplay wig – Jibryl

For my cosplay I was looking for a hot pink wig. The colour I wanted seems to be difficult to come across and most pink wigs I found had a rather pastel tone to them. Fortunately, the Jibryl wig from No game no life was exactly what I needed for Moka.

One of the things I like the most from Uniqso’s wigs is their quality. The fibers of their wigs are very smooth and very often, you find wigs with a mixture of colours. In this case light pink and dark pink. This makes them look very natural and ads interest to them. They have a lot of hair and are soft too.

I can’t wait to show you more pictures of my Moka cosplay. I have already shot this look with her maid outfit. Hopefully I will make her school uniform soon as well very soon. Inner Moka is coming too!

Making off the dress

For once I decided to make an easy dress. just, it wasn’t that easy! The base of the dress is a simple sleeveless pattern with darts in the bust and a gathered skirt rougly twice the size of my hips in chiffon. One of the reasons I made it was to reduce some fabric from my stash that had been there for a long time. The purple detail consists on an elastic trim which I cut and handsew to make it look how I wanted, it took me several hours but was worth the time.

Sweety Queen Dark Violet Lenses

Tomoyo has very dark purple eyes, in this occassion I chose the Sweety Queen Dark Violet Lenses which looked like a perfect choice for her. They come in blisters with a free case to hold them. If it is your first time wearing contact lenses remember to follow the best practices to keep them safe.

This circle lenses feature a dark purple colour with an outer black rim which makes your eyes look bigger. The uneven yet organic shape of the lenses make them blend with your eyes perfectly well. And they cover my dark eyes easily. As it is the case with Sweety lenses they are very cmfortable to wear.

Tomoyo Wig

I love when they make it easy to get wigs for your cosplay. Although I could have chosen any other purple wig, this one was particularly beautiful. The Tomoyo Wig features three different colours in their fibers, blue, dark purple and gray. It makes it look more natural. However, keep in mind that this wig looks darker in person than in the product photos. The wig is silky and full of hair and has lovely curls.

The bangs of the wig were already shaped for a straight cut. Nevertheless, I had to trim it a bit shorter to adapt it to the shape of my face. I also restyled each strand of hair individually, similar to how I untangle curly wigs, and I set it with strong hairspray to give it the anime look for Tomoyo.

This was a fun and easy project, but in the future I would love to make other Tomoyo dresses and more Sakura dresses as well. I can’t wait to use this wig and contact lenses again.

Dirty lenses are not only uncomfortable but risky too. I have a huge collection of coloured contact lenses by now. Of course, I want to be on the safe side with them to protect my eyes. And you should be too!

What you will need

You need to keep your contact lenses clean for your own safety. Some people don’t realise the importance of changing the solution of the lenses or the cases. Even those contact lenses for cosplay that last for a year need regular maintenance. In order to be on the safe side you will need the following

All in one solution

When looking after your lenses, this step is not optional. If you purchase contact lenses which last for more than one use, you need to store them on contact lens solution. Full stop. This solution will desinfect your lenses and make them appropriate to wear. It is very important to change the solution every few weeks to make sure it is effective. Saline solution or water are not an option! Make sure you read my contact lens FAQs to learn a bit more about it.

Lens cases

Changing the contact lens cases will help them to stay clean. It is something very important and you should do it! If you don’t change them you are giving the opportunity to bacteria to build a little house with a patio and a huge swimming pool on your case. Not good if they decide to surf to your lenses and your eyes. The recommended period is about every 3 months. I would suggest changing the case at least once or twice through the life of your contact lenses. You can get these cases in bulk for very cheap.

3 ways to keep your contact lenses clean

When actually trying to clean your lenses you have several options. These are the ones that I use and you can even combine the methods for extra peace of mind.

Hand rub

This method is not the best but it is still better than no method. When you wear your lenses protein accumulates on them which makes them less breathable. To get rid of all the impurities gently rub the lenses with your fingers and a bit of lens solution. I do this before and after I wear to make sure they are always clean.

Manual contact lens cleaner

You can get a manual contact lens cleaner for very little and it will prevent you from touching the contact lenses with your hands in order to clean them. I think this little device is ideal specially if you are travelling and you want to keep your contact lenses safe. You won’t always have the chance to clean your hands properly and this is where a pair of contact lens tweezers and this device come in handy.

Contact lens cleaning machine

Keep in mind that if your eyes are healthy and not very sensitive to begin with you may not notice a huge difference when using these machines. This doesn’t mean the machine is not doing its work. There are different types. Some create little waves that will remove any dirt from your lenses, other like my 3N contact lens cleaner absorb the proteins of your lenses by releasing hydrogen and are completely noiseless.

Just add cleaning solution to your gadget, submerge your contact lenses on the liquid, press the power button and wait as instructed. All the protein and dirt will get away from your lenses and they will be clean from any impurities.

To sum up

Remember, wearing contact lenses is fun, but you should always put safety first. If you follow the steps above, your lenses will last longer and will feel much more comfortable when you wear them. You will also reduce the chances of getting any infections. Remember, if your contact lenses don’t feel comfortable after 5 minutes, take them off immediately. Also consult a professional before you wear contact lenses for the first time and always be on the safe side. If in doubt, take them off.

The speed of Uniqso’s shipping never ceases to amaze me. Once my order was confirmed the items arrived in less than a week. A note to point that they ship from Malaysia.

They come by courier with updates to your phone and email to let you know when your parcel will arrive. As always they come well protected. These lenses in particular come in blisters as it is usual with the brand Sweety.

Description of the lenses

The Sweety Cyan Mesh covers completely your pupil. The colour of these ones in particular are cyan blue and they have a darker blue rim around them, but you can find this style in other colours like white, green, pink, purple or yellow.

The lighter colour has a mesh effect that lets you see through the gaps. Your vision becomes somewhat blurry but it is manageable. It feels like being out in a foggy night. I usually recommend to do your make up after you are wearing your lenses but it is not possible or at least not easy with these ones.

I find that many old cartoons had this style of drawing in which they used a flat colour for the eyes and they didn’t draw the pupils. This is specially true with the old Batman Animation or Justice League animation. In this case I chose to be Black Canary as in the old animation version. Here I am wearing them with a beautiful Bombshell blonde wig also from Uniqso.

This style of eye without pupil is also seen in the series of Naruto in characters like Ino or Hinata, the later with white eyes.

Final rating

These lenses may not be the most comfortable ones but their effect is quite unique and striking. I would definitely recommend them if you want to be accurate with some special characters. Also, your eyes will catch a lot of attention. However, wouldn’t be my first choice for a comfort cosplay.

Shipping and packaging

As always, the contact lenses from Uniqso arrive extremely quickly. If you are in a hurry don’t hesitate to order your lenses from them as they usually arrive super fast. So far I have never had an issue with them.

Mine came with DHL super protected in a jiffy bag inside another plastic back. The lenses themselves come in blisters and they always come with a spare contact lens case.

Description of the lenses

The Sweety Harajuku Blue have a rather simple design. They feature just two colours, a light blue and black. The main colour, which is the blue, is uniform. The lenses have a uniform black ring around them. The inner rim is also black but with a more distressed effect with short lines around the pupil.

The coverage of the lenses is moderate, you can hint the true colour of your eyes underneath. However, I think it adds to the effect. They also make your eyes look bigger. The real beauty of these lenses is the effect on the pupil. These lenses seem to enlarge your pupil. Probably a combination of a wider opening for the pupil and the strong dark rim on the inside. This is something you don’t usually find in other contacts. They are comfortable to wear but I seem to find them thinner than other contacts I have tried.

Sweety Harajuku Blue for cosplay

I bought these lenses with a character in mind. This character is no other than Elsa from Frozen. Of course her sister Anna is a good choice too as they have a very similar eye colour.

It seems to me animated characters tend to be drawn with very wide pupils and these lenses do exactly that, therefore my choice. In the future I may also use these contacts for my Astrid Hofferson cosplay. Here I was wearing them with the Elsa wig from Frozen II also from Uniqso.

Final rating

I am very happy with the Sweety Harajuku Blue. They work well with my dark eyes, however it would be interesting to see them on top of lighter eyes as I think the effect may change. I would have liked to find a pair of lenses similar to these but with more realistic features (such us darker lines on them) but these lenses work just fine.

10. Sweety K Premier Caramel

On tenth place I chose the Sweety K Premier Caramel. These contacts were nice, but not as vibrant as I would have liked. They are modest with a subtle enlarging effect. They definetely add interest to your eye but just about make the cut.

9. Sweety Crazy Lens Mirror

Don’t be mistaken. These contact lenses won’t reflect the world around you. However, they will make your eyes beautifully blueish. With a flat colour all around, the Sweety Crazy Lens Mirror are kind of unique. Ideal for a Cartoon Network character effect but not the comfiest to wear.

8. Sweety Anime Blue

In eigth place I chose Sweety anime blue. Their design is unique and it does ressemble anime eyes, including the little blob details. Althought they are indeed interesting I prefer a more uniform effect. Perhaps they are too bold for my tastes. That is why they are not higher on my rank despise their cool design.

7. Sweety K Premier Blue

If you are looking for a deep blue colour, the Sweety K Premier Blue are the perfect match. They enlarge your eyes and have a very rich colour even on dark eyes. My choice for old style anime characters.

6. Sweety Pro Black

Black lenses are a must in your collection. The Sweety Pro Black blend perfectly well with your eyes. They slightly enlarge your eyes and they are my first choice to cosplay demons and monsters.

5. Sweety Queen Light Brown

The Sweety Queen Light Brown are simply beautiful. They make your eyes look bigger and have a very vibrant colour. No wonder they have such a wide range of colours. Any anime character would look good with these lenses. Can’t wait to try other versions.

4. Sweety Devil Red

There is something about red, and these Sweety Devil Red contacts won’t leave you indiferent. You can wear the Sweety Devil Red for your favourite vampire or devil. They are vibrant and sexy. A must in your collection.

3. Sweety Bella Grey

I don’t always choose cartoonish cosplay lenses. Every so often I use more natural looking lenses. The Sweety Bella Grey surprised me not only for their coverage but for their naturality. These contacts are really bright and will do wonders for any characters with very bright eyes.

2. Sweety Galaxy Green

Your eyes are like stars. This could be the slogan for the Sweety Galaxy Green contacts. They are bold, they are striking and they simply look amazing in your eyes. If you need extra big eyes with a bit of fantasy in your eyes, try these incredible lenses.

1. Sweety Shining Brown

You are correct. My favourite lenses this year are brown. It may seem odd, but there are several reasons why I chose the Sweety Shining Brown as my best pair of 2019. To begin with, despise the colour, these lenses are super bright. The geometric design and little stars give your eye a lot of interest without being too unrealistic. Also, they make your eyes look huge, with an ultimate anime enlarging eye effect. They are just incredible and you do need them in you collection!

Uniqso‘s lenses usually arrive within one week of purchase whenever they come by courier. This time it was no exception. I was very happy when I realised they had included an extra cute contact lens holder.

Not only that, a few months ago I received a single lens sample for some brown lenses and upon getting interested on it they sent me a pair so I could test them too. I must say their customer service is like no other.

About the lenses

The name Sweety Galaxy Green pretty much describes what to expect of these lenses. They look like a nebula in your eyes.

They feature a wide outer black ring which spirals inwards to get patches of yellow and dark green that mix with each other. On top of those you have little stars and space dust also in yellow that make your eyes sparkle. The inner rim, which is quite wide, subtly mixes with your real eyes.

The lenses are very soft and comfortable and they make your eyes look bigger, giving the anime effect I really like.

Sweety Galaxy Green for cosplay

The deep green and wide black rim of these lenses made them perfect for my Froppy cosplay. In the anime this character has black eyes so I considered using the Sweety Pro Black lenses that I reviewed earlier this year, but I decided to make it more interesting by adding a touch of green.

Other characters with dark green eyes include Moka Akashiya, Hibiki Kitada from Owari no Seraph or Konata from Lucky Star.

Final Rating

I absolutely love the effect of these lenses, green lenses in general tend to be a bit dark so they don’t look as close to the original drawing as you may think. However, they create exactly the effect I was looking for and I highly recommend them. They also come in the colours violet, sky blue and ocean blue.

Sweety Galaxy Green

Shipping and packaging

Whenever I order wigs and contact lenses from Uniqso, the lenses are always the fastest to arrive. They come by courier in a little parcel that contains the lenses in blisters and a case for them. Of course the Sweety brand makes safe lenses approved by the European and Korean bodies (read more about contact lenses and safety)

This time it was one of those odd times in which one of my lenses was stuck to the side of the blister. The blister was also slightly bent, but this was more than likely the effect of the high pressure on the trip by plane. Easy enough I followed the instructions on the package and submerged the blister on warm water for a few minutes before I firmly shaked it and freed my lens which was in perfect condition.

Description of the lenses

The Sweety Queen Light Brown are beautiful lenses. Their high pigmentation prevents them from showing the real colour of your eyes underneath.

They are two toned, with a warm brown on the outer rim and a very desaturated brown on the inside. The effect is so intense they could be a good substitute for yellow lenses.

They are comfortable and make you eyes look bigger. The outer ring in dark brown and the random spots in strategic places makes them blend very well with my dark eyes.

I got these contact lenses so I could wear them with my Velvet Crowe cosplay. At the time I wore my cosplay with the Kimchi yellow lenses, but they are unfortunately unavailable anymore.

Another very good choice for these lenses would be the Red Blood Cell on Cells at work or Yukihira from Food Wars. But I think any characters with almost yellow eyes would be a great example for these contact lenses.

Final rating

I really like the Sweety Queen Light Brown contacts. I think they are different and stand out for themselves. The design works very well and I can’t wait to try other models from this collection which features over 20 colours.
