Not long ago I brought you a review of the book Wigs 101. A short booklet which showed you all the basics you needed to know about wigs and wig styling. Today is the turn for the Wigs 2 -Level up! book review. And let me tell you something in advance. It doesn’t disappoint.
About the author
I have already talked about the author, Karen Heinrich, aka Kukkii-san. Karen is a veteran cosplayer with over 10 years of experience. Not only that, she is a German scholar that has published several books and finished her career with a dissertation about cosplay.

Some of her cosplay achievements include being a jury and guest in numerous conventions throughout Europe and being the representative of Germany in the EuroCosplay competition as well as other reknown competitions. She has been passionate about wig styling from the beginning and some of her most iconic cosplays include Yuuko from XXX Holic and Mai Shiranui from King of fighters. About the book
The first thing about this book that caught my attention was its size. It features 90 pages triplicating the size of its predecessor Wigs 101. The book, in full colour, gives clear and detailed instructions on how to achieve different hairstyles. Some of them very popular amongst cosplayers.
The book is divided in several sections. Apart from basic information about wigs and extra tips and tricks. You will find detailed tutorials with examples for the following projects.
- Basic stubbing
- Odango (round bun)
- Poofy ponytail
- Ninja ponytail
- Foam braid
- Back parting
All the tutorials come with very clear instructions which come with photos of the process, detailed lists of materials and alternative solutions to create the most intricate hairdos.
Another remarkable point about the book is the beautiful photos with cosplay examples. The book features not only Kukki-san but several other cosplayers like Calssara or Shiroku.
Critique
If Wigs 101 was a great guide for beginners, Wigs 2 – Level Up! Is indeed a great guide for the advanced cosplayer. I can assure you even the most seasoned cosplayer will find this book helpful. And if you think this is the last you will see about Kukki-san you are wrong! She is already preparing her third book about wigs! And I can’t wait to see what this new book will bring.
As she says in her book, Kukkii-san will help you create unique hairpieces and defy gravity! And I can assure you she is the queen defying gravity.
