Raven Cosplay Tutorial

Sometimes the simplest cosplays are the best. To be honest I hadn’t even planned to do a Raven cosplay at the time (ok, perhaps just a little). However, I had just made a bodysuit for a different project and Halloween was around the corner. So I thought it would be easy to put together a Raven.

How I made it

I used my own bodysuit and cloak patterns to make Raven’s costume. For the bodysuit, I chose a slightly shiny stretch fabric that I had bought a long time ago and had a leathery look. Trying to fulfill those cosplay resolutions of using my stash fabric I set at the beginning of the year, because I always buy a lot of fabric but I never get to use it.

For the cloak, I used a dark blue crushed velvet fabric that I bought really cheap from my local fabric store (support small businesses!) I used a half circle pattern for the cloak. You can check my cloak tutorial if you want to learn how to make one, and I hemmed the edges. I then made the hood with the leftover fabric and lined the inside with a similar colour lining fabric.

If you need a bit of help with the patterns, you can actually download the ones that I used on my Cosplay Pattern Store on Etsy. They do come with full instructions and a step by step of how to make them (and they are useful for other cosplays too).

Finally I made my belt with Christmas baubles and foam and I added lights to the belt. It was a very easy trick as this time I didn’t need to do lots of circuitry. You can make easy lights for cosplay with just some cheap fairy lights.

Wearing my Raven cosplay

I was very lucky to get the MUA Lauren Burridge to do my make up. It was a simple enough make up but worked really well with the character. It also made my contact lenses, the I.Fairy Cara Red from Uniqso, to stand out.

Again Woolton Hall was the chosen location for this photoshoot. It works very well for this kind of character. And I believe the results were stunning thanks to the work of Chris Baugh. I got plenty of awesome images and they were all very eerie and spooky. For a fairly “improvised” cosplay I was really happy with the results.
