How I made my cosplay

For my Moka Akashiya Cosplay I slightly modified my Corset Bodice Pattern and my Circle Skirt patterns which I sew into three layers. I used velveteen in red and burgundy colours. Actually, I had this fabrics in my stash for almost TEN YEARS. That’s how long ago I had decided I wanted to make this cosplay. For some reason I never found a chance to make it even if I don’t think it was a particularly difficult build. Actually, in a sense I am happy that I made it now because I have improved so much during this time I think it was worth the wait.

Underneath I am wearing a petticoat that you can make as well following my tutorial. You can download the pattern for the bat wings as well and finally all the details are fake leather.

Cosplay Reveal

I had a lot of fun making this photoshoot and video. Of course Vampire Moka was the perfect cosplay for Halloween and I set my improvised studio to look like a spooky halloweeny place. It was actually quite difficult to shoot this cosplay, providing my room was small and I kept knocking everything with my puffy skirt. Billy Bones was the one that suffered the most. Also, I almost set myself on fire a couple of times with the candles! All worth it.

Despise all the trouble and not being able to breath much while wearing my corset, I am very happy of how all the photos and videos turned out. You can see all the extras and behind the scenes on my Patreon! I’m sure this won’t be the last time you will see my Moka Akashiya Cosplay!

How I made my Echidna cosplay

The main feature of Echidna’s outfit is the striped fabric. Instead of painting the fabric, which is a method I have used many times in the past. I chose to find fabrics that already had a pattern on them. I just fell in love with some off cuts which I matched with some of the fabrics of my stash. Indeed, this cosplay is actually full of tiny details.

I made the dress and the cloak with stretch fabric. This was troublesome to construct with all the scalloped edges but in the end it was worth the effort. I probably could have made a pattern with darts to accomodate non-stretch fabric, but this fabric was the one I had. I embellished all the edges of the cloak and dress with white embroidery floss and a white trim cut to fit. The skirt is a slightly sheer flowy crepe fabric, and the bodysuit is a stretch ruffled fabric with ribs. I fell in love with it when I saw it.

Wearing Echidna

Echidna’s photoshoot was a big experiment. As it was still lockdown I decided to take the photos at home. However, this time I got to play with quite a few new gadgets including a few new lights. I combined this with some trinkets that I had at home to recreate her tea party. Overall I am pretty happy with the results. It was also a delicious evening.

As usual, I took and edited all the photos myself (check my how to take photos at home for cheap). Perhaps in the future I will wear this cosplay again on a different setting as I still have many ideas for it. Maybe I can gather all the witches as well

Ruby Rose volume 5 cosplay making off

The best part of this cosplay was that 99% of the materials are recycled or very old fabric leftovers from my stash! First, I made the shirt and the cloak with my old bedsheets. Then, the corset had fabric pieces from many other projects and it worked out perfectly well.

I actually made this cosplay in just one week! I was very motivated and I did one part each day. You can follow all the tutorials on my Instagram. I go through the full build! (Psst, I post daily and my stories are full of WIPs, tips and cats)

This character has been on my cosplay wishlist for ages and I actually bought the wig while the first season was still on. I paired it with the Sweety Bella Grey contact lenses from Uniqso, which are my favourite for grey/blue eyes. We actually took amazing photos in the garden which I edited myself.

We all love superheroes, and if they are as cool as Nana from My Hero Academia we love them even more. Nana is the seventh user of the One for All quirk, same as All Might, the greatest hero of all time and symbol of peace! One of Nana’s greatest virtues was to go into battle with a smile to show everyone how strong she was. And she passed this onto All Might. This is how I made my Nana Shimura cosplay

I made my Nana Shimura Cosplay mostly from fabrics I had at home. She was an excuse to test some new patterns and I ended up with her bodysuit which I was very proud to make. I used stretch fabric for the bodysuit, faux leather for the gloves, viscose for the skirt and very light lining fabric for the cloak.

The belt is foam. I painted it with Rub’n’Buff. It was very easy to make. Check above to see some pictures of the process. Below you can download some of the patterns I used to make this cosplay. Check my how to make armour tutorial to learn a bit more about foam construction.

For this cosplay I used a very old wig which I cut shorter. First I trimmed the fringe roughly as long as I needed it. Then, I combed it back, I got extra volume this way. I used got2B glue hair spray and gel to shape it. Finally, I did a small bun and created spikes with more hairspray.

The final touch was the Sweety Bella Grey contact lenses from Uniqso which made my eyes look grey (Use the code “ALICECOS” for a 10% off)

Schuuchiin Academy uniform

I wrote a full tutorial on how I made this uniform on my Instagram account. The pattern will also be available on my Cosplay Pattern Store very soon. I used black and white cotton fabrics for this project and it only took me one day to construct it!

Chika Fujiwara

Chika is the crazy secretary of the Student Council, she is in the Board Game Club and will suggest all kinds of crazy games to play with the other characters! She is sweet and she is always smiling.

Chika wig

I used a lovely wig in pastel pink from Uniqso which was a perfect match for the character. It has a straight fringe and a mix of fibers with pink and light blonde which makes it super natural. It also has a lot of hair and the top is parted. (Pssst, use the code “ALICECOS” for a 10% off discount at any time!)

I think the wig makes you look super tanned as it is quite pale. It is comfortable and has a lot of room. It also has hooks to adjust it. The wig cap is beige so it blends very well with ligtht skin.

Kaguya Shinomiya

The vicepresident of the Student Council is Kaguya-sama, a rich girl who doesn’t know a lot of the world outside. She is extremely clever and would rather die than confess her secret love to the President of the Student Council. Although she may look scary she is indeed a sweet person that only wants to fit in.

For Kaguya-sama I chose contact lenses that hid my pupils. I had previously used this type of mesh lens for my Black Canary cosplay. In this occassion I chose the Sweety Crazy Lens – Red Mesh with black rim. If you notice I used the Cyan Mesh version for Chika as well. If you are wondering, yes you can see through theses lenses. However, they are not comfortable to wear for long as they actually make your vision blurry. It feels like looking through a red glass. The effect is similar with the blue lenses but perhaps less noticeable. These lenses have a nesh pattern that covers your entire eye and a black rim around the pupil. They also make your eyes look bigger.

Making off

I used fabrics from my stash to put together this cosplay. I made a pattern for a empire syle dress. The top is cotton and the skirt is white chiffon gathered in a rectangle skirt. For the top I bought a purple lace trim. As it was slightly too big I had to cut each flower individually and adjust it too my new width. Then, I handsew the trim to achieve the width I wanted.

I improvised a setting for this cosplay on my top room as I finished it during the Coronavirus pandemic in 2020. I tried to make the photos ressemble the original Cardcaptor Sakura artbook. Both the wigh and the contact lenses are from Uniqso.

Making off the dress

For once I decided to make an easy dress. just, it wasn’t that easy! The base of the dress is a simple sleeveless pattern with darts in the bust and a gathered skirt rougly twice the size of my hips in chiffon. One of the reasons I made it was to reduce some fabric from my stash that had been there for a long time. The purple detail consists on an elastic trim which I cut and handsew to make it look how I wanted, it took me several hours but was worth the time.

Sweety Queen Dark Violet Lenses

Tomoyo has very dark purple eyes, in this occassion I chose the Sweety Queen Dark Violet Lenses which looked like a perfect choice for her. They come in blisters with a free case to hold them. If it is your first time wearing contact lenses remember to follow the best practices to keep them safe.

This circle lenses feature a dark purple colour with an outer black rim which makes your eyes look bigger. The uneven yet organic shape of the lenses make them blend with your eyes perfectly well. And they cover my dark eyes easily. As it is the case with Sweety lenses they are very cmfortable to wear.

Tomoyo Wig

I love when they make it easy to get wigs for your cosplay. Although I could have chosen any other purple wig, this one was particularly beautiful. The Tomoyo Wig features three different colours in their fibers, blue, dark purple and gray. It makes it look more natural. However, keep in mind that this wig looks darker in person than in the product photos. The wig is silky and full of hair and has lovely curls.

The bangs of the wig were already shaped for a straight cut. Nevertheless, I had to trim it a bit shorter to adapt it to the shape of my face. I also restyled each strand of hair individually, similar to how I untangle curly wigs, and I set it with strong hairspray to give it the anime look for Tomoyo.

This was a fun and easy project, but in the future I would love to make other Tomoyo dresses and more Sakura dresses as well. I can’t wait to use this wig and contact lenses again.

I often find myself plotting new cosplays, buying all the materials to make them and then getting carried away by other projects before I actually manage to go back to the original plan. This was the case with my Raven Branwen cosplay. As soon as I saw the character I knew that I wanted to make it and I bought the materials. However, I didn’t start it until over a year after.

How I made it

Raven was a complicated build. The fabric parts of this cosplay are technically easy but it has lots of details on it that can be tricky.

The skirt is a pleated skirt that I made with black cotton and lined with dark red cotton. The gi or top is also made with the same materials. So are the boot covers. I also handpainted the fabric of the obi or sash.

The overskirt fabric was a dark red pleather which I actually had leftover from my Lady Sif cosplay. The edges feature black bias tape and it is all assembled with velcro. Other details include trims, rooster feathers and foam.

Finally, the trully difficult part, which are the helmet, gauntlets and the weapons, I made with C65 foam airbrushed with acrylic paints. You can see more of this process on my article how to make armour pieces with foam. The lenses of the helmet actually light up as I constructed a simple LED light circuit for them which I covered with Worbla Transpa Art.

For the wig I layered a Lolita Wig 293A from Uniqso to give it more volume and I used Sweety Devil Red contact lenses for her red eyes.

Wearing my Raven Branwen Cosplay

I chose to wear Raven in a competition in the UK. Lately I don’t enter many competitions anymore but as this one was local I gave it a try. I got a special mention from the jury but nothing else. Although I love competing I don’t seem to be very lucky on stage.

I never got many pictures back at the con but a few months later I had the opportunity to shoot with amazing photographer Ian Moore.

Funny story behind the photoshoot. We were supposed to meet on a Sunday for a different shoot with another cosplay. However, we mixed the dates and Ian showed up a day early. As my other costume was unfinished and I didn’t want him to go home without shooting I hurried up and rescued Raven.

We shot in a wonderful distressed garden with ruins that could have been one of the secret passages to the relics in the series. It was very cold and it was raining. As you can see I took many photos with my cloak on. We couldn’t stay long as it was so cold my fingers and toes hurt badly, same as Ian’s. But we managed to take some amazing shots. How I made it

Sailor Moon wasn’t my first sailor. Several years ago I made a Sailor Neptune, as well as a Sailor Mars for a friend. I had also made a Sailor V cosplay so you can say I already had a bit of experience.

This time I decided to remake the original pattern from scratch. I started by designing all the parts on my computer. It took some time and effort but I was very happy with the results and I could now easily modify the patterns for my future sailors. Did you ever think of using interchangeable pieces? The dress consists of a bodysuit with a sailor collar, a skirt, gloves and boots covers and of course many ribbons and complements like earrings, brooches, bows and a choker. It may have looked easy at first sight but was actually a very detailed construction.

The bodysuit, gloves and bootcovers are elastic. I used lycra for them. For the hot pink bows, collar and skirt I used polyester silk, which had a lovely texture and shine. The back bow and the sleeves are organza, which is what keeps them so sharp, yet see through.

Wearing my Super Sailor Moon Cosplay

I couldn’t resist wearing this beautiful cosplay at least once. I used my improvised photography studio at home. With some help of the amazing ironkobra we took some wonderful photos which I edited later on my new digitalizer tablet.

On this photoshoot I was wearing the Sweety K Premier Blue contact lenses by Uniqso which I had recently reviewed here, and I also wore their beautiful Sailor Moon wig which I modified and adjusted to fit the character even better. When SAO first aired I made an Asuna Yuuki Titania cosplay, I even made the bikini version. However, the wig that I bought at the time was the wrong colour, and I was only able to take pictures with these cosplays thanks to a friend who lent me her wig. I didn’t even style it at the time! My Asuna undine has blue hair so that was a different wig all together. This is why I was only able to wear my Asuna Yuuki casual cosplay much much later.

How I made my Asuna Yuuki casual cosplay

As I said, this cosplay is very old. I just never had time to wear it. The shirt is basically a rectangle with elastic bands on the top. The sleeves were a bit trickier but consist basically of two squares joined with ribbons and bias tape.

I didn’t bother making a skirt as I already had a denim tube skirt that would do the trick. Overall it was a very easy build. I did have to restyle the wig and I recorded a video on how I made it.

Wearing the cosplay

I decided to take some pictures of the cosplay at home. It gave me an excuse to cut the wig which was a Christmas present and try the make up for her. Also, my cosplay features the Sweety K Premier caramel contact lenses by Uniqso which I reviewed here.

We got some lovely photos in the garden, which is currently going through major changes and needs to be rebuilt. I was glad we managed to get a bit of sunlight after having a very rainy week. It is a simple cosplay but I was very happy to finally being able to wear it.
